Individuals and businesses that are carrying out taxable activities in India are required to register for GST. This includes all those who are registered with the service tax department, central excise department and state VAT departments.
Businesses that generate less than INR 20 lakhs in annual turnover need not register for GST. However, if they have a turnover of more than INR 20 lakhs, they must register for GST.
In case of the sale of goods or services to an unregistered person, the supplier is required to mention their GSTIN number on the invoice issued to them. If they have not registered for GST yet, then they should do so before issuing any invoices to unregistered persons from 1st April 2018 onwards.
