Estimated one-third of the world’s population, around 2.6 billion people are in some kind of lockdown due to epidemic COVID-19 by Coronavirus. This restriction of movement causes a huge impact on people’s mental health, the world’s economy, academics, and the environment.
Mental Health Impact on Patients, Doctors, and Others
Not even patients or other people, doctors are also found to be affected by mental health issues. These frontline workers reported with high depressive symptoms because of having a high risk of infection, stressful environment, and nation saving responsibility.
Precarious shut down of companies increases psychological stress and disorders amongst daily wagers as they lost their daily livelihood. Also, public mobility decreases sharply which directly affects the people relate to restaurants, shopping centers, grocery shops, and recreation places.
Loss on Jobs
Steepest fall in employment hit by pandemic COVID-19 significantly. Expected recession worldwide causes loss of jobs by millions of urban or rural workers.
Effect on Agriculture
Agriculture activities come to a complete halt due to supply chain distortion. Farmers who deal with perishable goods, facing huge losses as they cannot store it. In many states, it is a season to harvest rabi crops but due to the movement of daily wagers to their home state, farmers are unable to find laborers to harvest crops. But the government initiates to minimize the losses, they prepare a plan to harvest, store, and marketing of their rabi crops.
“ICAR is preparing documents on the possible impact on agriculture and allied sectors and measures to minimize the negatives so that the food system remains unaffected,” the government official said.
Farmers are battling with low demand and the low price of products, eventually affects the complete supply chain system
Effect on Sports
As people are living under lockdown and maintaining social distancing, big sports events like Olympics, Wimbledon, IPL have postponed. Sports organizations met with high loss, also it might be possible that this pandemic affects sportsperson spirits and people’s involvement.
Effect on Academics
Shut down of schools, colleges cause a cascading effect on students. Although online classes help to continue the learning process, students going abroad for higher studies found trouble in the admission process. Many entrance examination postponed due to epidemic COVID-19, affects the students moral.
Effect on the Environment
These catastrophic consequences, make an adverse effect on the environment. A pause of industrial effluents and less emission of carbon contain substance increase the quality of rivers and reduces the AQI and PM 2.5 values.
“The reduced fossil fuel emissions due to (the) transport sector and a slowdown in other emissions-related activity is slowly reducing the air pollutants,” said by Gufran Beig, a scientist with the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) under India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences.
But it should not be a matter of happiness to clean up the environment at the cost of human suffering. We can only take it as a learning lesson.
