Today the world celebrates International Women’s Day on March 8. The purpose of celebrating this day is to promote peace with women’s rights. Although every day is Women’s Day, this day is celebrated to honor all women and their achievements, regardless of their division, be it national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political. Women time and time again have proven themselves superior in all fields and proud. Not only are they economically and politically strong leaders, but they also dominate sports, entertainment, and other categories. But do you know why International Women’s Day is celebrated or how it started? You know why.
History
International Women’s Day stems from the labor movement. It first appeared in North America and throughout Europe in the early twentieth century when 15,000 women marched in New York in 1908 demanding fewer hours of work. They also called for better salaries and the right to vote. A year later, the Socialist Party of America declared this day the first National Women’s Day at an International Socialist meeting in Copenhagen. Many changes and new goals have been made over the years to better illustrate the importance of this day. In 2015, federal states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 5 is “Gender equality and empowerment for all women and girls.
International Women’s Day is an official holiday in many countries such as Cuba, Armenia, Mongolia, Russia, Uganda, and Ukraine.
